Updates, Monday, March 23,
2009
Rusty Bergen, who is our new president,
has asked me if I would continue to send out updates like I
have in the past. Since I'm vice president, which is
basically a no-job, I'm happy to be of service.
Deck
happenings
June 20 is date
for Summer Solstice
June 7 will be an
informal memorial event for Erika Kile who used to live here
with her husband, Ron Kile. Anyone who wishes to attend
is welcome. Will probably be in early
evening.
Bulkhead
We're in the process of
replacing the community's 35-year old bulkhead. For any
of you who have been down to the waterfront lately, this will
be no surprise. Boards are coming up on the
walkway and the bulkhead itself is having a hard time keeping
the soil from leaching through into the water.
Lerian and Bradbury, the marine engineering firm which just
finished our new pier, is currently getting us the
necessary permits. This timing is of the essence for us
to be "grandfathered" as far as the bulkhead
replacement. I.e., because we are currently within
the legal boundaries to build "in-kind," we don't have
to alter the construction and possibly lose space in the
basin. Therefore, the really good news is that we
are positioned, permit-wise, to start planning.
This
project is obviously a major financial endeavor and we'll be
taking steps carefully as we did with the pumping station to
figure out the construction process and
financing. This includes deciding on the
best materials and options for construction and overseeing a
project that will probably take three or more years to phase
in. At this point, we do not have an estimate of cost,
although Lerian and Bradbury advises us that phasing in over a
period of years will help make the fiscal impact more
manageable.
Dredging is a separate issue and we are
still evaluating what needs to be done, but we have the
permitting. Dredging is a marina-related
project. The bulkhead is community-wide.
Finally, there is some concern about
erosion of the hill down to the marina. We are looking
into a way to monitor this situation so we are not dependent
on visuals only. One possibility is doing a surveying
technique similar to the one used by the county to see if
there has been any movement of the new retaining wall next to
the pumping station. No movement was found.
You
will be kept up to date.
Vicki
Thought you'd be interested in a little exchange with the county.

Hi Vicki: we have confirmation from Department of Public Works that Dreams
Landing Way is a county road (see below). Hopefully, this will resolve any
future issues about snow removal. Note: Dreams Landing Point is a private
road. Gail

Good morning Gail-
Based on research into available records, everything I find points to Dreams
Landing Way being a County road. Dreams Landing Point, off of Dreams
Landing Way, is private.
I'll ask that the online database be updated to show Dreams Landing Way as a
County road for purposes of snow removal.
Thanks for bringing this one to my attention, and thank you for assisting
Ms. Lathom.

Hi Vicki: Did you see the county snow plow in your community at
approximately 6:03 pm last evening? (see Rhody's comments below). We will
get back to you when they confirm 100% that Dreams Landing Way is a county
road. Gail
P.S. I want to apologize to you about the lack of follow up on the judging
and selection of nominees for the Model Government Program. I understand
that there was a change in staff in the County Executive's office and the
process was not as they had originally planned. Thanks for your willingness
to serve as a judge.

Evening Gail- I haven't forgotten about this one. After some research, I'm
90% sure Dreams Landing Way is a County road. We'll take care of it for this
snow event regardless. Once we confirm that its County-owned, I'll have the
database records adjusted accordingly and let you know.
Thanks
Rhody
ps- While I typed this email I watched a GPS equipped plow travel Dreams
Landing Way at 6:03 pm

Vicki: I have copied Rhody Holt of our Highway Operations Administration,
Department of Public Works, to follow up on the inquiry from one of your
Dreams Landing residents about snow removal of Dreams Landing Way. Will get
back to you as soon as we have a response. Gail

Gail:
Sent your note out to the neighborhood and got a replay indicating that we
may not be considered a county road for snow plowing. Is it true
that DL Way is listed this way? The county is very late in arriving
here.....truck comes down Wilson and definitely stops at the entrance
of DL and turns around.
